ENTRY 10

Quote: "Tongues of flame darted round the bed: the curtains were on fire. In the midst of blaze and vapour, Mr. Rochester lay stretched motionless, in deep sleep" (151).

Reflection: How lucky the residents of Thornfield are that Jane came to Mr. Rochester's rescue and put out the fire in his room and saved his life. The house most likely would have burst into flames thus losing their home, belongings, or life. If they had been a survivor, they most likely would have lost their master and would be screwed out of an income and shelter. It is amazing that Mr. Rochester would not wake from the fire and smell of smoke within his own room, but the tiny Jane Eyre can from across the way. Jane reacted calmly and rationally under the pressure of fire and a life threatening situation. She was able to put out the fire solely, save the life of her master and lover, and keep the entire event a secret from the rest of the servants in the household. Jane may be plain and simple on the exterior, but inside she is superwoman. She is so talented that she was able to distinguish the fire with some water left over to drench Mr. Rochester in. If that does not take skill, then I don't know what does.
