Reflection: This observation of Mrs. Fairfax's brings light to the attitude and behavior of Mr. Rochester. No wonder the man is bitter and grave; he was betrayed by both his brother and his father. Like Jane Eyre, he never had anyone to befriend or love him til later in life when he inherited his fortune. This must be the spark behind the strong connection between Mr. Rochester and Miss Eyre. He can relate to her life style, gloom, and isolation because he was once in her position with no one to fall back on or be there for him. The death of Rochester's brother cannot be the reason why Mr. Rochester is still bitter and grave, something from his past is still weighing him down. I am curious to know whether or not Rowland Rochester turned their father against Edward or if his father always had higher regards for Rowland. If so, why? A parent should never favor one child over another especially without just cause.
