Reflection: This unusual step out of Jane's comfort zone shows an immediate change in confidence from moving away from her aunt and onto the school grounds. She gets a fresh start at life, a chance for friendship, and the opportunity to be praised. Her entire life while living with her Aunt Reed was miserable as no one appreciated or even cared much for her. Her new found confidence brings hope for a brighter future for Jane and a happier outlook on life. The author foreshadows that attending Lowood will benefit Jane's attitude and social life. She quickly became bold to confront and question a young woman years older than her, and that is not common for even vivacious little girls. This action encourages the reader to believe that Jane will be a success at Lowood and learn her duties with zest.
